Can Schizophrenia Be Cured Naturally Without Medication? Not Completely.

Many people with schizophrenia are in search of a cure for their condition. It is completely natural to look for cases of people that have been cured of debilitating mental illness and other diseases. The truth is that there is no cure for schizophrenia at this particular time. However, science and researchers are advancing – and it is hoped that a cure will eventually be discovered.

Can schizophrenia be cured naturally without medication?

Cure is a very strong word when it comes to a serious illness like schizophrenia. Most experts would agree that nobody has been “cured” of the disease, but many people have learned to successfully manage symptoms – even without an antipsychotic medication. Where we need to be careful is when people start utilizing practices that they think will cure their condition that have no scientific basis.

Many people with the condition believe that there is some miracle cure for the condition that involves non-pharmaceutical intervention. Other fake spiritual leaders promise that the individual just needs to work on their “karma” or “spiritual life” and “subconscious mind” to overcome schizophrenia. The truth is that although these practices may give the individual with the condition some hope, the hope is rooted in lies.

Schizophrenia should be managed with proper psychiatric intervention and care. Ignoring a professional’s recommendation for the treatment of this disease is akin to someone starting a vegetarian diet in hopes that it will cure them of diabetes. It may help reduce some symptoms, but is not treating the root of the problem – brain chemistry. If you are going to attempt to treat your schizophrenia naturally, it is recommended that you work with a professional psychologist and study the research on various natural treatment options.

Treatment without an antipsychotic medication?

It should be noted that in somewhat mild cases of schizophrenia, people may be able to cope with symptoms without the use of an antipsychotic medication. There are documented cases of people making full recoveries without following psychiatric order. However, the majority of people that go against standard treatment protocol end up suffering more than necessary.  There are many natural remedies for schizophrenia that have been proven to show a degree of benefit.

For example, healthy diets, EPA Omega-3 Fish Oil, Antioxidants (C, E, etc.), and therapy have all been shown some benefit in helping individuals manage symptoms. In some individuals, these natural interventions may be very beneficial. Perhaps in cases of mild schizophrenia, they may even fully reduce symptoms. Individual physiological factors and severity of the schizophrenia plays a big role in determining how a person will respond.

Researcher Martin Harrow studied 64 patients with schizophrenia over a 15 year period and found that individuals who did not take antipsychotic medication were actually superior in mental functioning than those who had taken medication. Although all patients experienced difficult symptoms to deal with, those that had not taken medication showed longer periods of both recovery and global functioning.

Schizophrenia symptoms can be managed with proper treatment

Some people have noted that their symptoms can be temporarily cured with proper psychiatric treatments. In other words, there are people that are fully functioning despite their diagnosis. In some cases, you may not even be able to tell that they have this illness. Take Elyn Saks for example – professor of Law, Psychiatry, and Psychology at University of Southern California. She has schizophrenia and is still high functioning to the point that most people would not be able to tell that she had this disease unless she told them.

Most medications on the market today are atypical antipsychotics.  Although they carry a variety of side effects, their side effect profile is supposed to be lower than the old “typical” antipsychotics.  These medications have been found helpful at managing symptoms and helping people with this condition be productive members of society.

Can schizophrenia be cured completely? No.

If you have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, it is not the end of the world. It is another challenge that has been thrown at you by life. Know that you are not alone and that millions of people have lived with this condition. Although the disease may push your mental limits at times, it can be managed successfully – so successfully that at times, you may experience a full recovery.

For further examples, be sure to read about various famous people with schizophrenia – many have gone on to achieve great things in life despite getting diagnosed with this condition.  It is important to continue to keep hope alive for the future that one day, science will advance enough to cure this debilitating mental illness.

  1. My best friend is currently fighting the ‘mild’ type of the disorder. I’m her main source of stability and comfort, as I myself suffer from a neurological disorder and another unstable mental illness. We’re both not on medication, because of the side effects and how extreme it can be, plus the short-term memory problems screw with us already so taking pills regularly (even with reminders) would be a challenge in itself.

Nonetheless, this article brings me peace of mind, knowing that she can live a life without the pills even if it will be hard. We are going to try taking more vitamins, Omega-3 pills and watching what we put into our bodies to help lessen our symptoms. Thank you again for putting this out there. It does help!

  2. My adult daughter suffers from this terrible disease. At times she has made a great life for her self while on medication. But twice now, she has stopped on advice of “practitioners.” She sees the and convinced them she is OK or at least better to the point they agree and they go along with her delusions. The the slide starts again. She refuses to allow her husband to accompany her the doctors office and thus the doctor will not discuss he case with anyone. I swear if we could get black market Risperdal and grind it and give it to her in secret we would. At this time she denies ever bring sick and refuses to see a doctor.
